Jags takes our photo on his front deck. We have work and school and life to wrap up, prep to prep, parties to party, concerts to watch. All fits into panniers, or so we hope. Still a surreal plan, heading to Lisbon. More real now that we have visas.

Today is Jan 9. We just spent the day getting our minds blown at the Castelo dos Muoros (Moorish Castle), hiking to it, not biking (that would be silly). The Moors controlled most of Portugal and Spain from about 750 to 1200, leaving a huge influence on the entire area. Of course this was a big threat to the Catholics that lived throughout the rest of Europe. The first Crusades were to Spain to 'liberate' the people from Islam. Eventually, of course, this is exactly what happened. Kiki is going to do a blog post on the castle, which exemplifies this struggle. The Moors built it, but the conquering Catholics took it in 1143 and rebuilt it.
